24 second shot clock

History // The National Basketball Association (NBA) for years had had problems attracting fans (and television coverage) – until the introduction of the shot-clock. Prior to its adoption, teams could pass the ball endlessly without incurring a penalty. There was little scoring, fouls were common, and fans were bored – if there were fans at all. The most extreme example occurred on November 22, 1950, when the Fort Wayne Pistons defeated the Minneapolis Lakers by a record-low score of 19-18 . A few weeks later, the Rochester Royals and Indianapolis Olympians played a six-overtime game, with only one shot in each overtime. Something had to be done. The NBA tried several rule changes in the early 1950s to speed up the game and reduce fouls. But everything truly changed when players were forced to begin watching the clock in 1954. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shot_clock
